Why the period is inside the quotation marks

I don't want you all to think I've been obsessing over this question ever since you all laughed at me for my explanation of where the rule came from, but I happened to come across this article in my daily perusing. Enjoy!

  1. Adam: Thanks for this! There is usually a practical reason why some rule exists, such as the metal type might break. This seems as good a reason as any for putting the period and comma inside the quote marks.
