Homework: read chapter 11. News quiz on Thursday. One-on-one meeting with professor Lawrence, DON’T FORGET TO BRING ALL YOUR GRADED PAPERS.
Read article on blackboard.
What we did in class:
1. Finishing up web writing
-Looked at different websites to give us an idea of what web writing looks like
with its headlines, blurb, links to related stories, options of videos/pictures etc...
We looked at the websites of BBC, New York Times, New Yorker, Washington Post, The Guardian and Aljazeera.
-Keep in mind: web writing is accelerated news writing. It’s always updated.
-When doing web writing: use present tense, write cut lines (captions), put pictures/videos, write your own article. This is called lateral reporting. It consists of taking one story and putting it in different platforms.
-What the readers want: speed, visual logic, more specific information, good and accurate content, have a nice tone (no long words).
-If you want to be a web writer or blogger: you need to know how to do graphics, maps etc...
2. We then moved to public relations writing (that is what we will be doing until the end of the semester).
-Public relations people can help to manage a crisis.
-They have clients: companies, corporations, celebrities (with celebrities, PR practitioners are called publicists).
-PR offers different sort of jobs related to Public relations, for example PR people are called a press secretary when they work for an elected official.
3. In class writing: we had to write a press release.

Hanane: Very good summary of the class. I forgot to post the article I mentioned on Blackboard, so don't worry about reading it. Hanane provided good tips on web writing. Remember that like broadcast writing it is constantly updated, so it should always be in the present tense. There should be a sense of immediacy about it. When writing for the web always consider how you can present the news visually through photographs, video, maps, charts and graphs. Also, it is a good idea to provide some interactivity for the reader. More on public relations writing to come today.
